National Public Lands Day Cave Restoration at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park -Saturday, September 24th from 8:30am to 1:30pm
(Whitehall, MT) – Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) will host a Cave Restoration Project in honor of National Public Lands Day at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park on Saturday, September 24th from 8:30am to 1:30pm.
This September, volunteers at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park will join hundreds of thousands of fellow Americans at public land sites across the country to give back to the lands where we play, learn, exercise, and relax in celebration of the 23rd annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD) – the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands.
Over 50,000 people pass through the cave each year and despite our best efforts, debris and other materials find their way into the cave hindering growth and even damaging the cave formations in some instances. Participants at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park can celebrate National Public Lands Day by helping to clean the cave’s lint and dust problem; resulting in a healthier cavern system which can be enjoyed by future generations as we do today. This is a unique way to experience the cave that you don’t get on a regular tour as you work up close to the formations.
Check-in for new volunteers will begin at 8:30am; 9am for returning volunteers. The event will start with a cave ethics presentation followed by the cave cleaning from about 9:30am to 12:30pm. An appreciation lunch for all participants will be provided by the park after the cleaning.
Volunteers must wear long sleeves and pants. A headlamp, helmet, work gloves and kneepads are suggested if you have them. If not, the park will supply them. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to sign up for this great opportunity, please call the park visitor center at (406) 287-3541.
