Great Backyard Bird Count at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park -Saturday, February 17 at 10:30am

(Whitehall, MT) – Montana State Parks ( will host the Great American Bird Count at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park on Saturday, February 17 at 10:30am.

Scientists can learn a lot by tracking birds such as migration patterns and population health, even weather and climate change. Here is your chance to help them.  Join park staff for a short hike to record the number and types of birds that call the park home during winter. The hike will meet at the Main Visitor Center near the park entrance and last 2-3 hours. Please dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy footwear and bring your binoculars. Snacks, water and a camera are also recommended.

Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time. Now, more than 160,000 people worldwide join the four-day count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds. Last year, Great Backyard Bird Count participants in more than 100 countries counted more than 6,200 species of birds on more than 180,000 checklists!
