Visitors Advised to Be “Bear Aware” at Sluice Boxes State Park

(Great Falls, MT) – Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) would like to alert visitors to Sluice Boxes State Park that there is a dead horse located approximately 1.5 miles in from the Evans Riceville parking area trailhead. The carcass is currently in Belt Creek. The horse was critically injured in the park on Sunday, September 2 and had to be euthanized by the owner.

Park staff moved the carcass off the trail and down into the canyon to minimize potential contacts with hikers and bears. Due to extremely difficult access to the current location of the carcass, park management have decided to let scavengers and nature take its course. When hiking Sluice Boxes visitors should always be aware of the presence of bears and carry bear spray.

Visit Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) and enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, boating and more and discover some of the greatest natural and cultural treasures on earth.
