Decision Notice Released for Land Acquisition at Milltown State Park

(Missoula, MT) –Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) announced today, the acquisition of an approximately 10-acre property donated by International Paper Company adjacent to Milltown State Park. The acquisition, which was approved by the Montana State Parks & Recreation Board in April 2016, required work over the past year to work out the details of the land transaction with IP. In Fall of 2015, Montana State Parks (MSP) proposed to accept the donation (fee-title acquisition) of the parcel of property from International Paper Company (IP), located immediately adjacent to Milltown State Park near the confluence of the Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers. Acquisition of the parcel would secure permanent public access to the park via the existing access road and enable MSP to move forward in the development and opening of the park to the public. In conjunction with the previously given Board approval, MSP has released a decision notice for a draft environmental assessment (EA) to accept the donation, acquire the property and conduct necessary improvements to the access road. The EA was made available for public review and comment in November 2015 and received 23 comments, all in favor of the proposal. The Decision Notice is available online on the Montana State Parks website at http://stateparks.mt.gov/news/publicNotices/recent.html or by calling 406-542-5533 or emailing mkustudia@mt.gov. The Decision Notice pertains to the EA conducted as part of the Montana Environmental Policy Act. This action is subject to appeal, and must be submitted to the Parks Division Administrator (at 1420 E. 6th Avenue in Helena, MT 59620) in writing and postmarked within 30 days of this decision notice by May 21. The appeal must specifically describe the basis for appeal, explain how the appellant has previously commented to the Department or participated in the decision-making process and explain how FWP might address the concerns of the appeal.
