Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Why has Montana State Parks decided to go with a reservation program?
A.In effort to improve the services offered to our users, Montana State Parks has implemented a campsite reservation program for (20) state park locations that provide camping opportunites.  The convenience of pre-planning camping stays has been the single most requested visitor service in recent years.

The reservation program will enhance services provided to state park visitors, offering 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week on-line accessibility, as well as seven (7) days a week call center reservation processing.  The new program has site-specific capabilities that allow campers to select the campsite of their choice in their favorite Montana State Parks.

The program will allow visitors to pre-plan and know they will have a campsite even on the busiest weekends.  The program will also eliminate the need for campers to arrive days in advance of a weekend at a park to be assured of having a campsite.

The reservation program will allow families to plan a visit to a specific park and be assured of being able to camp together.  For families traveling from different areas to meet at a specific park, this will greatly enhance their experience.

Note: the campsite reservation program will not apply to the traditional camping opportunities throughout Montana’s statewide Fishing Access Site (FAS) Program.
Q.How can I make a reservation?
A.The Internet booking site may be accessed through the Montana State Parks Website, fwp.mt.gov and clicking on the reservations, or by visiting the ReserveAmerica website.

Reservations services will also be available toll free through the Call Center at 1 (855) 922-6768.

Q.What will I be charged when making a reservation?
A.In addition to the standard camping fees, there is a $10.00 non-refundable, non-transferable reservation fee for each site and stay booked.

All reservation fees go toward support for the reservation program, Montana State Parks will not retain any portion of the reservation fees.
Q.What Payment methods are accepted?
A.Internet Reservations may be paid for by Visa or MasterCard. Call Center Reservations may be paid for by Visa, MasterCard, personal check or money order.
Q.How far in advance or close to arrival can I make a reservation?
A.Reservations may be made up to nine (9) months in advance on a rolling reservation window, and as close as two (2) days prior to your planned arrival date.
Q.How many sites can I book in one call or Internet session?
A.Customers may book unlimited sites provided they fall within the rolling nine (9) month reservation window.
Q.What if I need to cancel my reservation?
A.Reservations may be canceled; a $10.00 cancelation fee for each campsite booked and cancelled will be applied.
Q.What if I do not wish to make a reservation, will parks still have some traditional “first come, first served” sites available?
A.Yes, while reservations are recommended in order to ensure a site for your visit, each Montana State Park will have approximately 20%-25% of the available campsites available for walk-in campers. This traditional practice was an important consideration for Montana’s program.
Q.How will I know which campsites are reservable and available; and which campsites have been designated “first come, first served” (walk-in)?
A.On the reservation Internet booking site, customers will be able to easily access a map and listing of the campsites in each Montana State Park campground.

Individual campsites will display if they are available to reserve, as well as the available dates. If the site is a designated  “First Come, First Served” site it will display as available for “walk-in” only.
