Geocaching, a great sport using a GPS unit to find a hidden box or item, is becoming increasingly popular in Montana State Parks. If you are considering placing a cache in a State Park or Fishing Access Site, Fish, WIldlife & Parks staff can provide valuable input about the location of a cache, as well as assure public safety for those searching for the site. If you are trying to locate a cache, please take care to protect yourself from injury, as well as protecting cultural and natural resources.

Permit

It is necessary to obtain permission from the manager of the park before placing a cache. Download the permit application below and return the completed application to the "Regional Parks Manager."

Policy

The Geocache Policy prohibits geocaches from:

• being hidden where they could have potentially damaging effects on those seeking the site or on the State Park, or
• containing items that could pose potential danger for the public including alcohol, weapons, drugs, drug paraphernalia, or items that are otherwise socially unacceptable.

Fees

There are no fees for geocaching in Montana State Parks.
