Wild Horse Island
State Park on Flathead Lake
The largest island in Flathead Lake preserves an endangered palouse prairie environment, an old growth Ponderosa pine forest historic and cultural resources, and offers incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. Boat access is required to reach this day-use-only 2,160-acre island.
Wild Horse has been a landmark rich with history since the Salish-Kootenai Indians were reported to have used it to pasture horses to keep them from being stolen by other tribes.
Check with park staff on the best locations to land, for hiking trails and views. Note: Private property is found along parts of the perimeter of the island. Please do not utilize private docks.
This park and the southern end of Falthead Lake are located on the Flathead Indian Rservation, so you will need a Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe fishing license to enjoy the excellent fishing here.
